Welcome to the family, Benjamin Grant! 8 lbs 8 oz, and 20 inches of pure sweetness.
I woke up at 4am with a painful contraction and knew I was in labor. The rest of the family woke up at their regular 6:30, and contractions were still pretty sporadic so we decided Joe would go to work and come home when I was ready to go to the hospital. Joe went to work, kids went to school, and my mom came over so she'd be here for the kids when I was ready to go.
10:00am rolled around and contractions were 5-8 minutes apart, so I decided I'd better go in. I called Joe, no answer. Called again, no answer. Waited a few minutes, called again, no answer. I decided I'd have my mom take me and when Joe realized he had missed 3 calls from his laboring wife, he'd know to come to the hospital. On the way, I called my sister Lindsey to make sure she could do school pick-up and let her know I was heading to the hospital. She called her husband Kelly, who works with Joe, and told him to go tell Joe to check his phone. Sure enough, Joe was sitting as his desk working away waiting for "the call". Kelly poked his head in and said, "Joe! It's baby time!". Joe checked his phone, which he realized somehow had been turned to Do Not Disturb at some point, and was soon on his way to the hospital.
I got checked in at 10:30, and they told me I was only dilated to a 3 (which I had been since the previous week), but admitted me anyway because I told them I usually have pretty fast labors and had been timing my contractions all morning. Soon it was 1:30pm, and I was at a 6 having really strong contractions. My doctor came in and broke my water, and 2 minutes later he was here! It was a boy, and I couldn't believe we were a family of 6, just like that.
In true Kacy and Joe form, we hadn't thought of names at all since we hadn't found out the sex. The whole pregnancy I thought it was a boy, but even then I hadn't given the name much thought. One night, when I was about 38 weeks, I woke up in the middle of the night, and a name just popped into my head as soon as I opened my eyes. It was like the baby told me what his name was. So Benjamin Grant Rawlings it was! Within hours of filling out the birth certificate, we had called him lots of nicknames: Benny Boo, Benji Boy, Benny G, and B.G... we'll see what ends up sticking, but we're just so darn glad he decided to come a few days early (ok mostly me) so we didn't have to wait until my Labor Day due date to love on our angel boy! Happy Birthday little Benny Boo!
