Surgery & Covid

What a time we've had over the past couple weeks. Cohen pulled his profundus tendon on his dominant hand during a football game a few weeks ago. We thought he just jammed his finger, so we taped it up and waited for it to heal on it's own (classic Kacy move). When he still was in a lot of pain and couldn't bend it, I took him in. The doctor immediately knew that it was his tendon, and asked why I waited two weeks to bring him in... the tendon usually can only be saved within a three-week window. They scheduled us in the next possible time slot for surgery, which was that Tuesday. We went in for a Covid test that Saturday to be able to enter the hospital for surgery, and it was positive. I couldn't believe it. No symptoms whatsoever. Went back the next day and took another one, sure it was a mistake. Positive again. After all this time of quarantining and mask-wearing over the last year and a half, he gets Covid the week he needs surgery to save his hand. We kept the kids home from school for a week, and missed our ward Primary program, with no one actually having any signs of being sick. One of the weirder weeks I've experienced as a mom.

The hospital had a policy that you can't schedule an elective surgery until three weeks have passed after a positive Covid test (that would have put us 7 weeks from the injury date... remember that three-week window?!). Long story short, I talked to the doctor, and the doctor convinced the hospital that it was more of an emergency than elective. We went in one week later and prayed that his tendon was still salvageable. Cohen is now on the mend, the doctor said surgery went great, and he should have full mobility in his hand after therapy. We are so relieved! Cohen is such a brave kid, and we're so thankful for his example of faith and calmness in a tough, scary situation. He had so many friends come by to check on him and bring him treats (he's never eaten so many Twix in his life!); it was very apparent that he is loved by so many. Although his football season was ruined, him and his dad still went to games and practices to support his awesome team. He ended up being a fantastic sideline strategy-talker with coaches and teammates.
